Don't bring the children

Metro10 April 2012

Justin Edwards has been to Edinburgh three times with his ruddy-cheeked creation, the booze-loving children's entertainer Jeremy Lion.

But tonight's show is the one that hit the nail on the head and got Edwards a Perrier nomination at last year's festival. Plenty would argue that the concept of a teary-eyed clown is not the most original premise for a character comic to lay as his foundations but Edwards has injected What's The Time, Mr Lion? with a sharp script and performs his wonderful anti-hero with skill and pathos.

Needless to say, don't bring the children: what Lion is kicking against is the shadow of his father, who serves as narrator (on tape) to the educational musical which Lion and his pianist Leslie are trying to perform.

Except the teddy bears in his picnic are all mutilated, we're taught to tell the time via Lion's huge clock (ahem), and the story of Goldilocks And The Three Bears is performed with bottles and a beer can, as Lion drowns himself in copious amounts of spirits and Special Brew (Edwards must have a liver of steel).

The comic is no stranger to a world beyond his alter ego - he won the Perrier Best Newcomer award in 2002 as one third of sketch outfit The Consultants and his next Scotland-bound show (featuring rude songs and jokes) doesn't feature Lion at all. Best to catch this portly shambles now, before he stops coming out to play for good.
