Encore! our winners to stage more pet projects

Two big winners from this year's Evening Standard Theatre Awards hope to produce more shows for the West End stage.

Pet Shop Boys star Neil Tennant and comedian Tim Minchin both broke out of their usual genres to make their first foray into the theatre world.

Tennant, 57, and bandmate Chris Lowe, 52, wrote ballet The Most Incredible Thing, which won the Beyond Theatre award for new collaborations and breaking boundaries at Sunday's ceremony.

Minchin, 36, shared the best musical award for co-writing Matilda The Musical, based on Roald Dahl's book. The production at Sadler's Wells with the 48-year-old dancer/ choreographer Javier de Frutos, pictured with Tennant and Lowe, proved a huge hit and Tennant joked: "We're looking at the Emperor's New Clothes with Javier dancing naked."

Minchin added: "I'm going to write another musical but not necessarily based on something famous."
