Trisha Brown is better than she lets on

Po-faced reputation: Trisha Brown
10 April 2012

At the South Bank, the Dance Umbrella festival continued with the innovative, influential America veteran Trisha Brown. The mixed bill included Brown’s work from four decades, and was a reminder of how much better she is than she lets on.

Her po-faced reputation is baffling when you watch the alluring L’Amour au theatre, while Opal Loop, with Fujiko Nakaya’s cloud-like dry ice set, literally looks like heaven. However, Brown was let down by the South Bank’s basic facilities, which barely rate as professional, and while her dancers are able, they have a patchy theatrical demeanour.

By that I don’t mean the easy appeal of ballet, just the polish you expect at a paid-for
performance.
