Channel 5 have responded after a homophobic slur was used on Big Brother.

Housemate Sam Giffen sparked controversy earlier this week when he used an offensive term in the Diary Room.

Giffen had become embroiled in an argument which erupted after he and two other housemates decided to mix the contestants’ alcohol into a cocktail – a choice which was not popular with everyone in the house.

When the disagreement escalated, Giffen was called to the Diary Room to calm down, where he referred to gay housemates Ryan Ruckledge and Hughie Maughan as “bum boys”.

Giffen, who is also gay, claimed that he had done “nothing wrong” in regards to the initial argument.

Channel 5 released a statement regarding Giffen’s language, saying: “Big Brother does not tolerate unacceptable language in the Big Brother house. Big Brother intervenes where necessary to remind housemates of this.”
