The fifth series of Call the Midwife has been more emotional than ever before – and the final episode was the most heart-breaking of the lot.

The latest run saw the show move into the 1960s, tackling the thalidomide scandal that saw thousands of babies born with physical deformities.

As if that wasn’t upsetting enough, the end of the series brought a sudden and tearful farewell to one of the nuns of Nonnatus House.

This being Call The Midwife, it was a peaceful passing for a fan-favourite character, but one that left many viewers devastated and tearful.

Sister Evangelina, played by Pam Ferris, died in her sleep after suffering a stroke and was found by the caretaker, before being given an open-casket funeral for local people and her fellow midwives to pay their respects.

Viewers took to Twitter to share their reactions to the exceptionally sad episode.

As upsetting as the episode was, there’s some good news – Call the Midwife fans can expect a Christmas Special in December, and a full sixth series in 2017, confirmed in a post from the show's official Twitter feed.

Thanks for the memories, Sister Evangelina.
