Plans for a Clueless reboot have divided fans after it was described as a cross between Mean Girls, Riverdale and a music video from Lizzo.

US network CBS – which also produced Gossip Girl and the 90210 reboot – is working on bringing back the movie as a television series, according to reports.

It will be set in a US high school and chronicle queen bee Cher disappearing and her best friend, Dionne, stepping into her shoes, industry publication Deadline has said.

But while some fans said they would be delighted by the return of Clueless, others said a reboot was not needed as the original movie was “perfect.”

It has also been described as a "gritty" show, which has led to many raised eyebrows.

One fan wrote on Twitter: “You can just make a new show about teens, you don't have to reboot Clueless.”

Authors Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan added: “WE DON'T NEED A "DRAMATIC" CLUELESS REBOOT. CLUELESS IS PERFECT. NOT EVERYTHING NEEDS TO BE REBOOTED!”

And numerous others voiced their anger at the idea:

Some fans were delighted with the rumour, with one writing: “I AM HERE FOR THE GRITTY CLUELESS REBOOT!”

Eric Goldman, of GetFandom, added: “Gritty Clueless Mystery Reboot Where Cher is Missing" may be my new favorite ridiculous thing since the CW was developing that dystopian version of Little Women. (the fact that the CW is a contender for this too makes it all the better).”

The original movie – starring Alicia Silverstone, Stacey Dash, Paul Rudd and Donald Faison – saw huge success when it was released in 1995 and has had a cult following since.

It is loosely based on Jane Austen’s novel Emma but is set in a high school in Beverly Hills.
