Dancing on Ice fans were left cringing after Brian McFadden made his debut on the ice – to a Westlife hit.

The Irish singer – who quit the boyband in 2004 – kicked off Sunday night’s show dancing to the group’s cover of Barry Manilow’s Mandy with professional partner Alex Murphy, days after Westlife dropped their new single.

McFadden’s song choice didn’t go unnoticed by viewers who were left in hysterics, with many branding it “truly awkward”.

One tweeted: “Brian dancing to @westlifemusic was just cringey #DancingOnIce #westlife #mandy.”

Another posted: “Brian McFadden dancing to Mandy on dancing on ice is truely awkward #westlife #DancingOnIce #brianmcfadden.”

McFadden also took a swipe at his former band mates Nicky Byrne, Kian Egan, Mark Feehily and Shane Filan after judge Christopher Dean asked: “Was that you singing?” McFadden replied: “The good bits.”

When criticised for the lack of romance in his face and the routine, he replied: “I’ve heard this song for 20 years. I just hate it. It goes through me – [Murphy] hates it too!”

McFadden’s performance came days after Westlife released their new single Hello My Love – their first in eight years.

Westlife will tour the UK and Ireland for the first time in seven years next summer with The Twenty Tour in celebration of the group’s 20th anniversary.

It was touch and go as to whether or not McFadden would be able to perform on Sunday night after dislocating his shoulder in training on Saturday.

Mark Little became the first casualty after losing out to Ryan Sidebottom in the dreaded skate off.
