After the lights and warmth of Christmas, we’re left with the cold grey of January – and everyone needs a bit of escapism from that.

BBC One are doing their bit by airing a brand new series of Death in Paradise, the not-entirely-serious detective series set on the fictional Caribbean island of Saint Marie.

Kris Marshall is back as DI Humphrey Goodman, and after last series saw the departure of original cast members Sara Martins and Gary Carr, the new run presents a more settled version of the team.

With a new status quo, there’s more time to focus on the balance of light-hearted fun and perplexing murder mysteries that the series has become so well-loved for.

Speaking to the Radio Times, Marshall revealed that some of the murders in Series 5 are particularly ingenious.

“We’ve got someone who gets killed on the boat while everyone on the boat is underwater diving; we’ve got a guy who is dead but sends a text message saying, 'Someone has murdered me,' from beyond the grave,” he said. “We have another guy who arrives on the island and doesn’t know anybody, checks into his hotel room and is murdered during the night.”
