Ever since Jenna Coleman announced that she was leaving Doctor Who for ITV’s new period drama Victoria, Whovians have been scratching their heads over who may step into the TARDIS next.

A new rumour suggests that a companion might have been found – and it may be former EastEnders star Rakhee Thakrar.

The actress played Shabnam Masood in the BBC soap, and left the show abruptly at the beginning of February.

According to the Radio Times, a source claimed that Thakrar is set for “an audience with the producers” in the auditions, and could be joining Peter Capaldi in the blue Police Box.

If the 32 year-old actress does end up with the job, she will become the first non-white companion for the Doctor since Freema Agyeman’s Martha Jones in 2007.

Series 10 of Doctor Who is due to air in 2017, with just a Christmas special episode set for 2016.

The next series will mark Steven Moffat’s last as showrunner, having led the show since Series 5 back in 2010.

Chris Chibnall, former Doctor Who writer and creator of Broadchurch, has been announced to take over, while it is expected that Peter Capaldi will end his run as the Time Lord at the same as Moffat’s departure.
