With Wikileaks publishing the full extent of the leaked Sony emails, new details came to light about potential plans for a Doctor Who feature film, with conversations between Danny Cohen, BBC’s director of television and Sony discussing “tremendous interest” in the possibility of bringing the UK’s sci-fi stalwart to the big screen.

Now Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat has spoken about the potential movie, saying that if a film ever happens it won’t “damage” the show.

Speaking to the Radio Times, Moffat said: "You can't make a movie that damages the TV series. That's the only thing I'd say about it. I'm very happy for there to be a movie, very happy [for there] to be a theatre show – anything you like – but the TV show is incredibly important and must not be hurt. Everybody knows that."

Though he is currently overseeing the TV series, which now stars Peter Capaldi as The Doctor and Jenna Coleman as his companion Clara Oswald, Moffat further clarified that any feature film plans would sit outside his remit.

"If someone can work out how [a movie] actually works, I've got nothing against it, but no one's ever been very clear about how it actually works. It's not really got that far and it's not my job. I can neither action it nor stop it,” he said, adding: "I'm sure there's money to be made out of it but that's not the point, is it? We are British, the BBC. We are there for the art."

Series 9 of Doctor Who is currently in production with a view to return to BBC One in the autumn. Recently Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams was confirmed for a guest appearance in a role that Moffat has said will "challenge the Doctor in very unexpected ways".
