EastEnders fans were left baffled by the latest twist in the Branning tale as Max returned to Walford this week.

The former villain returned home to Albert Square with a surprise in store as he set about booking to newly reopened club for a drinks reception to introduce his new wife.

In the opening scene of Tuesday’s episode, viewers saw Max take the hand of his bride but had to wait the whole episode to find out the identity of his newest spouse.

And they were left horrified when Rainie Cross – sister of ex-wife Tanya –walked in and passionately kissed her husband.

Posting on Twitter, one viewer wrote: “Omg what! Max has married Tanya's sister Rainie #Eastenders.”

While another gasped: “Asif for Rainie Cross becoming Mrs. Max Branning Number Whatever was a surprising twist! Wonder what Tanya, Cross and Lauren would have said if they found out... #EastEnders.”

“Rainie is the last woman I would of thought of max would marry. Then again max would marry anyone #eastenders,” added somebody else.

It’s fair to say Rainie and Max haven’t always seen eye-to-eye with them recently locking horns at Abi Branning’s bedside, shortly before she died of injuries sustained after falling from the roof of the Queen Vic.

And some viewers are already speculating that the late Abi – and her newborn baby Abi – could be the reason for Rainie’s return, with her wanting to get the baby away from Max and in the care of Tanya.

For now, viewers will have to sit back and enjoy the new relationship to see how the newlyweds settle into their new life – and what, if anything, happens now.

EastEnders airs Mondays and Fridays at 8pm and Tuesday and Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One.
