Emmerdale looks set to lose a resident for good as Sandy Thomas prepares to move abroad with a brand new love interest.

Freddie Jones, who plays the pensioner, is leaving the soap after 12 years, it has been confirmed.

Actress Wendy Craig will put in a brief stint on the show as newcomer Maisie, who catches Sandy’s eye.

A visitor to the village from Australia, Maisie goes to see Sandy at his home and reveals she has brought him some gifts from their mutual friend Betty Eagleton.

She and Sandy get on so well, she extends her visit but later takes him by surprise when she reveals she must return sooner than he expected.

As she hands him an envelope containing tickets to join her in Australia, he has a decision to make.

Should he follow his heart and start a new life on another continent or remain in Emmerdale?

Viewers will have to tune in to find out how Sandy's storyline ends in the character's final Emmerdale episode which will air on Friday, February 16.

Emmerdale continues Tuesday, February 6 at 7pm on ITV.
