Graham Norton led a touching tribute to Sir Terry Wogan during the BBC broadcast of Eurovision 2016.

The presenter gave a short but sweet speech about the beloved broadcaster, who famously hosted the UK’s coverage of the singing competition for many years.

Speaking before the ninth act performed, Norton said: “Tonight’s Eurovision is a bittersweet one for many of us, because of course it’s the first contest since the death of Sir Terry Wogan.”

“Eight years ago when I was lucky enough to get this job of commentating, Sir Terry very kindly, graciously phoned me and the only bit of advice he gave me was, ‘don’t have a drink before song nine’. Now, this is song nine.

“So whilst the crowd here cheer on their home boy, I would urge you back in the UK at home to raise a cup, a mug, a glass, whatever you have in front of you, and give thanks for the man who was, and always will be, the voice of Eurovision.

“Sir Terry, this is song nine.”

Viewers across the country showed their support on social media, posting photos of themselves with drinks.

Clare Balding praised the tribute as “beautifully done”, while Colin Murray concurred that it was “well said”. Artist Grayson Perry said it was a “lovely tribute”.

Wogan passed away on January 31 this year following a battle with cancer – but he’ll always be fondly remembered, especially for his witty take on Eurovision.
