Benjamina Ebuehi has become the latest Great British Bake Off contestant to leave the competition.

The 23 year-old teaching assistant made it to the quarter finals of the BBC baking show, but struggled in Tudor Week – which brought challenges including hot water crust pies, and marchpane showstoppers.

The baker gave a tearful goodbye from the show, evidently disappointed to have not made it to the last stages of the competition.

“Quarter-finalist… I think once it sinks in I’ll be like, actually I’ve done something really, really cool,” she said.

“To get this far in itself is an achievement, so I’m really proud.

“I’m going to keep on baking. No marzipan, no Tudor ever in my life, oh my gosh – but it’s so much fun being in there, and it’s so much fun baking with everyone.

“It’s been really special.”

Paul Hollywood attributed her departure to the increasing toughness of the competition, saying: “Benjamina’s just said to me now, it wasn’t my week. I said no it wasn’t, but you can’t afford to slip up on Bake Off.”

Fellow baker Selasi also spoke about Benjamina leaving the show – with the two sparking up a notable rapport during the series.

“It’s a shame to see her go, she’s a proper sister to me,” he said. “She’s probably the only one who thinks I’m really funny, everyone else thinks I’m not funny at all. It’s good to have a friend like that.”

The episode saw Candice receive star baker for her stunning peacock-shaped showstopper.

Next week’s semi-final will see the remaining four contestants – Candice, Selasi, Jane, and Andrew – take on patisserie challenges, competing for a place in the final episode.
