MasterChef viewers baffled as contestant cooks piranhas for judges

Fans of the show didn’t like the look of the unusual dish

MasterChef viewers have been left confused after a contestant served up piranhas for the judges.

The cooking competition’s four finalists headed to Peru to work at Central restaurant in Lima which is considered one of the best in the world.

They were tasked with helping the chef cook the restaurant’s 17-course tasting menu, which included piranhas' heads on a bed of sweet potato.

Fans were completely baffled by the unusual dish, with some even threatening to switch off.

One wrote: “They’re serving up crispy piranha skins on #MasterChef and that’s my cue to turn off the TV.”

Another tweeted: “#MasterChef are they sure trestaurant in Lima “consistently ranked in the top 5 in the world”? Piranha heads sticking out a bowl and cooking spuds in mud? Wtf.”

A third wrote: “Whilst I appreciate the skills to make the dish are pretty amazing, I cannot fathom why anyone would want to eat a bowl piranha heads.”

Even the judges seemed wary of the delicacy with John Torode describing it as “unbelievable” and “comforting but rather disturbing”.

MasterChef continues Thursday, April 12 at 8pm on BBC One.
