A third posted: "Never normally one to watch the #RoyalVarietyPerformance however it must be said that Prince William has been a pretty good sport so far. Never seen any other royals galloping on TV”.

As Hart was accompanied on stag by cast members from the musical Annie in which she did a stint as Miss Hannigan, she asked one of the child actors: “Now before you gallop back off is there someone you wanted to ask to gallop?”

“I don’t know they could maybe do a seated gallop or a standing gallop.”

At which point the little girl looked towards Prince William and said: “Please sir, will you gallop with us?”

An obliging Duke of Cambridge immediately rose to his feet and proceeded to gallop in the royal box with the Duchess of Cambridge laughing and clapping by his side.

As well as his horse riding impression, Prince William was also persuaded to shout Hart’s catchphrase "such fun" back at her.

Elsewhere in the programme the host was reunited with colleagues from her BBC sitcom Miranda and joined singers Alfie Boe and Michael Ball on-stage for a rendition of Bring Me Sunshine.
