A six-month long season celebrating the unsung women who have helped shape the city launches on London History Day.

Beginning on May 31 and running until November, the programme contains more than 70 events spanning contributions to the arts, sciences, politics, education, and health.

Highlights of the season include talks curated by the Fawcett Society, the UK’s leading charity campaigning for gender equality and women’s rights.

The Nursery delivers three nights of improvised theatre: On June 8 at the Broadgate Garden Society, the actors will use audience stories about their grandmothers to create scenes looking at the role of women in society. On September 26, The Bareback Kings present Gender’s a Drag. Finally, an improvised political campaign inspired by audience polls celebrates the centenary of the Representation of the People Act. The Campaign, on November 16, is part political drama and part debate.

Musicians take to the stage with showcases in Spitalfields, and to the streets for Sounds Like London, where the focus is on the greatest pop and rock songs by women.

A sculpture park will feature the work of internationally renowned women artists from June 27, while a film season at the Guildhall Yard from August 13 to 15 shines a spotlight on the Heroines of Cinema, both behind and in front of the screen.

From September 28 to October 31, a Guildhall Art Gallery exhibition heralds the achievements of the Bajan nurses who helped to deliver the UK’s post-war baby boom.
