Printworks, the mammoth club in Rotherhithe, has announced it is to open a new space directly beneath the main dancefloors.

The new room, Inkwells, will initially open just for the club’s autumn/winter season this year, first launching on September 17 and running until New Year’s Day next year. September 17 also marks the club’s return, as it presently remains closed.

The basement spot marks the first time the club has set up a new space since it first opened in 2017 – some years after the Standard was printed on the site. The giant presses that once rumbled in the room, and the newspapers that were produced there, is nodded to by the new room’s name, as it is by the Printworks moniker.

As with the main dancefloors above Inkwells, sound will be space’s focus, with speaker stacks set to line the walls throughout the room – though in contrast to the upstairs room, here the ceilings will be low and the room will feel more intimate.

Bradley Thompson, managing director of Broadwick Live, who operate the club, said of the news: “As we prepare to open our doors again, it’s exciting to announce another evolution in the Printworks story.

“As a business we are committed to constantly bettering the experience for all our guests across our venue portfolio and the addition of the Inkwells allows us to programme even more incredible artists and talent for the upcoming Printworks London season and beyond.”

The opening weekend will be the first chance to see the room in action; it’s coyly be called Redacted, as artists playing won’t be revealed until the shows themselves, and photography is banned.
