A lawyer who is a “leading expert” on the licensing of lap-dancing clubs and sex shops has been chosen to help boost the capital’s night-time economy.

Philip Kolvin QC, who specialises in licensing and helped Fabric nightclub strike an agreement with Islington council to re-open, was today named as chair of the London Night Time Commission. Mr Kolvin will work 1.25 days a week, or 65 days a year, on a £17,500-a-year salary in a post that was originally intended to be occupied by Night Czar Amy Lame.

The lawyer, who is head of Cornerstone Barristers, has represented lap-dancing chain Spearmint Rhino as well as feminist lobby groups Object and the Fawcett Society. He will be working alongside Ms Lame, who is paid £35,000 for a 2.5 day week.

Mr Kolvin will oversee the commission, which is currently conducting a review into the capital’s night-time businesses and £26 billion a year economy. Mr Kolvin said: “At the heart of every great city is a great night-time economy. London’s night life is internationally renowned and forms a key reason for people wanting to live, work and invest here.”
