New Year’s Eve fireworks: Tickets for 2019 show to go on sale at the end of September

The first tickets for this year's New Year's Eve fireworks will be released at the end of September, it has been announced.

The Mayor of London's office is set to put the £10 tickets on sale at noon on Friday September 27, available to buy here, with a maximum of four per person. Typically, 80,000 tickets are made available in the initial release, with proceeds used to off-set the cost of infrastructure for the event.

As with last year, a total 103,000 will be up for grabs; those with one will be able to watch the display from viewing decks on the south bank of the Thames, opposite the London Eye. More than 12,000 fireworks, 2,000 lighting cues and 30 tonnes of equipment will make up the show, which costs City Hall £2.3m. Despite renovation works having kept Big Ben silent this year, the sound of the bell chiming will ring in the display.

No date has been set for the second batch of tickets, where a further 20,000 tickets will be available, as well as any returns. Entry has been ticket-only since 2014 to prevent overcrowding; the event used to attract about 500,000 revellers to the West End, creating major problems for the emergency services and on the Tube and leaving many people unable to see the display.

Sadiq Khan said in a statement: “There is no better way to welcome in the New Year than by watching our extraordinary firework display on the banks of the River Thames.

“The eyes of the world will be watching as our skyline is again illuminated by a spectacular celebration of fireworks that shows everyone how London is open to all.

“It’s vital to buy your ticket in advance, so I urge anyone wanting to join us to book their ticket as early as possible so they can come and enjoy another wonderful show.”

Last year Khan sparked Brexit controversy when he approved a “London is Open” theme that saw the London Eye illuminated in blue with gold stars to recreate the European flag.

Things to know

Tickets will be posted out just before Christmas – attendees should expect to receive them before Christmas Eve, December 24.

Attendees must carry ID on the night to prove their name matches that on the ticket – this is TFL’s attempt to stop touts. However, tickets can be bought as a gift for someone else – instructions are here.

With more than 100,000 revellers in town, and many of those in very merry spirits, the event is billed as being unsuitable for children and for over 16s only. No pets are allowed.

Entrance to the viewing zones is expected to be from 8pm. A DJ will play from 9pm until the countdown just before midnight. Big Ben will then bong, the fireworks will last around 12 minutes, and afterwards the DJ will play again.
