Prosecco House: a London bar dedicated to the Italian fizz is now open

A bar that exclusively serves premium prosecco has opened in London as sales of the sparkling wine continue to soar in the capital.

In what is believed to be a London first, Prosecco House in Tower Bridge will only stock and serve Prosecco Superiore DOCG, a premium variety of the Italian sparkling wine.

The Standard was given the first tour of the bar which launches on Monday.

Owner Kristina Issa, 35, has been working directly with five family-owned vineyards from across the region to stock wines that are not available anywhere else in London. Ms Issa, a former financier who is originally from Syria, said she came up with the idea as she struggled to get the quality of prosecco she’d enjoyed in Italy in London.

“It came to me over drinks with friends back in January,” she said. “I love prosecco but could never find a glass of the same quality here in London compared to Italy. I wanted to create a bar that feels both luxurious but is also open to everyone and that all feel welcome. There is a gap in the market for a high quality bar serving the finest prosecco that is not in a hotel or a cocktail bar. I am working closely with producers to ensure guests receive the finest prosecco that is so readily available in Veneto.”

More than 20 different proseccos are on the menu from the five wineries, Marchiori, Rivalta, Cirotto, TASI Bio and Andreola. Glasses start at £7.50 and bottles at £30. Guests will also be able to buy bottles to take home, or order them using Deliveroo, and a small selection of prosecco cocktails, including Aperol Spritz and Bellinis, will also be available.

The believed first written reference to prosecco was in 1593 in a series of notes written by an English traveller exploring northern Italy. The name is derived from that of the Italian village of Prosecco near Trieste, where the grape and wine originated.

During its soft opening period between Feb 5 to 13, Prosecco House will be offering guests a 30 per cent discount from their total bill. For more information visit proseccohouse.com.
