Is deconstructed coffee the most hipster trend ever?

Move over cold brew lattes, there’s a new java trend brewing down under that’s gone one step too far

You might be able to tolerate cereal cafes, smashed avocado on sourdough and rainbow bagels, but the latest hipster food trend might just push you over the edge.

A cafe in Melbourne is now selling ‘deconstructed coffee’ to its bearded patrons that like to have complete artistic control over their morning brew.

Served on a paddle (a bit like beer tasting), your deconstructed coffee comes in three separate cups – one with espresso, one with milk and one with water, with the idea that you mix your coffee order yourself.

But far from proving a novelty hit with everyday folk, the reaction to the newfangled serving format has been rather negative over social media.

Coffee lover Jamila Rizvi posted a picture of the arty coffee order on Facebook, sharing her disappointment with what she was handed when she asked for a latte.

“Sorry Melbourne but no. No no no no no,” she said. “Hipsterism has gone too far when your coffee comes deconstructed.

“I just waited almost 20 minutes for an actual cup before realising it would not be forthcoming.

“I wanted a coffee. Not a science experiment. I prefer to drink my beverages out of crockery and not beakers.

“Next stage? I’ll just get a chopping board with a bunch of actual coffee beans and an upside down hat on it.”

But despite the backlash, the trend has seemingly taken off in Melbourne, with users commenting on Rizvi’s post that they’ve seen similar coffee platters served up at other shops across the city.

That means it’s only a matter of time before someone in Hackney catches on and we’re all attempting to mix our coffees on the Central line.
