The Olympic best: London gin

9 August 2012

A glass of London gin is the only way to toast our Olympic heroes. Seek out the new generation of small-batch distillers, says Richard Godwin

1. Portobello Road

Juniper, citrus, pepper — created at the “Ginstitute” above the Portobello Star pub. £24.99

2. Sacred Gin

Ditch the tonic. This elegant gin, made in Highgate, scented with cardamom and frankincense, deserves to be drunk neat. £29.85

3. Sipsmith’s

A leading new generation gin, distilled in a copper still in Hammersmith. Makes a mean martini. £27.99

4. Hayman’s Old Tom

Made to a 19th-century recipe by one of London’s grandest gin dynasties. Lip-smackingly good in an old-style Martinez. £21.25

5. Gilpin’s

A new, small-batch “auteur” gin: sage and bitter orange complement the juniper for a dry, strong (47%) finish. £39
