A crazy golf course featuring one of Zaha Hadid’s last designs is being planned for Trafalgar Square.

The pop-up course, designed as part of this year’s London Design Festival, features a series of holes each created by a group of artists and designers including Mark Wallinger and Sir Paul Smith, as well as architect Hadid who died last month.

Her design with its trademark curves is on two levels and will snake between the square’s lions. Sir Paul will transform the steps from the National Gallery with different coloured stripes.

Other holes include a maze designed by Wallinger and a cross-section of a giant pigeon where players will have to hit the ball through its gut.

Londoners are being asked to help raise £120,000 to build it.

Festival director Ben Evans said: “If you do a project in Trafalgar Square it’s quite a challenging public space and you need to find something that engages a wide group of people because there are a million people passing by each week. We want them to stop and say ‘Wow, what’s that?’.

“It will be poignant because of Zaha’s death but I think what she’s done is stunning.

“She’s done a number of things for the festival over the years and the company are keen to ensure all of the projects that were in development go ahead. For us, this is an opportunity to celebrate and honour her.”

The course is the latest in a line of installations set up in the square for the festival including a giant chess set and a robotic assembly line.

A Kickstarter campaign has been launched to raise the money with the course set to open from September 16 to 22. For more information, visit: kickstarter.com
