Bao Fitzrovia: London’s fluffiest buns

Look no further for the capital’s top Taiwanese rice buns
Ben Norum11 December 2017

If you can’t walk past a bakery without making a “nice buns” joke, then boy, do we have the restaurant for you. Bao has been stealing your sandwich’s stars and causing queues down Soho’s streets since it opened in 2014.
The restaurant, which comes from the same illustrious group as Hoppers and Bubbledogs, is named after the Taiwanese rice buns that it sells filled with its much coveted, richly flavoured fillings.
The classic bun comes stuffed wide open with braised pork, pickled veggies, coriander and crushed peanuts, with other varieties sporting fried chicken, lamb shoulder, daikon and even a Horlicks ice cream bao for a sweet-meets-savoury aftershock.

The best news is that you’re a little more likely to get in since BAO opened their second bricks-and-mortar location in Fitzrovia. The queues of diligent foodie fanatics for the no reservation sensation have died down a little bit, so now’s the time to get hold of London’s fluffiest buns.
