Baozi Inn, review: Hunger-beating buns that are cheaper than chips

Raid your piggy bank and you'll eat like a king

Chinese fast food doesn’t have to mean sweet and sour chicken for the 98th time. Chinatown’s Baozi Inn you have to sit down, but you needn’t be sitting for long – service is supremely fast in this dinky it stop, approximately the size of two wardrobes (there isn’t too far to walk after all).

The Inn is named after the filled rice buns that are a staple. Here they are hearty bundles of doughy gratification, filled with minced pork or steamed veg – think the Chinese version of a Cornish pasty. There’s something you should know about Baozi Inn – my word, it’s cheap. A baozi will set you back a whole £2.50 for veg, £2.80 for pork – and the baozi are big. Two are a decent lunch portion. Speaking of lunch, you can pick up a lunch of rice and noodles with a decent selection of toppings – including spare ribs or braised aubergine – for £8.90.

Baozi Inn isn’t sophisticated by most measures, but for satisfying Chinese fare at student-friendly prices, you’ll find it hard to beat.
