Fay Maschler's week in food: From curly kale to boiled peanuts

The Evening Standard's restaurant critic details the culinary highlights – and low points – of her week

1. Thrilled to find that Reg likes the curly kale I roast with olive oil and sesame seeds, I then see the Daily Mail says it can cause bloating, thyroid problems and sudden death.

2. Helping judge The Canonbury Tavern’s Scotch Egg Challenge, I try all 20. Holborn Dining Room and Princess Victoria W12 — winners in the traditional and off-the-wall categories — are serving their creations for the next three weeks.

3. Lobster thermidor (half) at Le Pont de la Tour fits perfectly the glamour of the setting next to the rippling Thames and the sparkling lights of Tower Bridge.

4. Boiled peanuts at Shotgun in Kingly Street are apparently a traditional southern American snack. They should save the fuel required.

5. Jacob and Rafferty, two of my grandsons, come to dinner. After spaghetti carbonara, we finish with vanilla ice cream and homemade butterscotch sauce.
