Five things David Sexton ate this week

Our restaurant critic searches for good grub during the Toronto Film Festival and is thrilled to be reunited with his local market in Harringay
18 September 2013

1. In Toronto for the film festival, lots of almost supernaturally flavourless stodge — sandwiches, paninis, wraps — eaten on the run from the terrible chain Tim Hortons.

2. After moving out of the Downtown, great pasta at last, in Corktown, from Fusaro’s, 294 Richmond St E — a joint where they have a clock showing the time in Calabria as well as one for Toronto.

3. Really good Northern Thai food, starting with delicious deep-fried Morning Glory, from Mengrai Thai, 82 Ontario Street, where the ebullient proprietor Allan Lim then showed us phone-pix of himself with numerous celebrity diners, including Mick Jagger.

4. Desperate at Pearson Airport, a last taste of Canada, its national dish, “poutine”, from the awful True Burger: chips grossly smothered with gravy and curd cheese.

5. Back in happy Harringay, divine capocollo (cured pig’s neck) from Siena, via the stall O Toma O Morte, at the lovely little Sunday market in Mattison Road.
