Flesh and Buns: Deliciously dirty Japanese Izakaya food

Thought Japanese food was healthy? Not at this deliciously dirty Japanese pub in the heart of Covent Garden

We bet you thought Japanese food was healthy. We bet you thought it was all raw fish and wasabi and white rice. We’re so pleased you’re wrong, because that means we have Flesh and Buns dishing out deliciously dirty Japanese Izakaya food. The subterranean depths of Covent Garden lend to the artfully sordid atmosphere – the toilet walls sport some distinctly NSFW manga – but this works because this is pub food, consisting of gratuitously un-lean meats drenched, in sauces, curries and all the miso you can dream of.
The buns of the outfit come in the form of pillow soft fluffy rice buns – you could take a nap on these after the third beer quite happily. Flesh and Buns comes from the team behind Bone Daddies and Shackfuyu so expect flavours big, bold and deep. Stuff these to your desired measure with sharing dishes of punchily-flavoured fillings, from a pretty glorious miso aubergine, to classic crispy duck and a braised ox cheek with kimchee tare and coriander shiso. If you’re feeling flush, the Wagyu rump steak is a sure fire way to get your protein with oodles of naughtiness.
