Hixter Bankside: Chickens and cows rule the roost

Mark Hix has turned this former factory into a carnivore's haven

Hixter Bankside has factory chic down to a tee.

Mark Hix’s Borough restaurant took over the premises of a former metal box factory, taking after the industrial credentials of Tramshed, its Shoreditch-hailing elder sibling set up in – you guessed it – a former tram generator building.

When it comes to the food, Hixter Bankside is about two things; chickens and cows. And boy, do you know about it. A whole roast chicken is presented at the table: trussed up, head over heels (quite literally), feet and all. There are six cuts of Mighty Marbled Glenarm Estate steak to choose from, as well as a steak burger, steak salad and a barbequed sugar-pit rib. Somewhat surprisingly, vegetarians need not dismay, with a pleasingly diverse and just as indulgent meat-free menu, including a butternut squash and potato curry and a cauliflower cheese burger and chips.

Nightcap? Mark’s Bar has its second incarnation at Hixter Bankside, the younger sibling to the celebrated Soho elder. A Hix Fix cocktail is a must-try, but why not take after Mr Hix himself and try the Temperley Sour, one of his favourites: Somerset Royal 3yr cider brandy with Pomona, Burrow Hill apple juice, citrus & egg whites.
