Lardo: High on trend but bigger on flavour

A Hackney hangout serving above-the-bar pizza and local charcuterie
Lardo: Perfect pizzas at a neighbourhood favourite
Ben Norum14 December 2017

With high ceilings, a lattice of bare filament bulb pendant lights and an open kitchen, this Hackney Central restaurant has a New York feel to it that suits lunch or dinner. Most of the menu is, however, more locally sourced: they make their own charcuterie from the Mangalitza pig, which is often described as Wagyu-style pork, and they stock several London-brewed ales and spirits.

It churns out superlative crisp-based pizzas from its shiny mirror-clad oven – try its namesake variety topped with spinach, egg and strips of melting lardo.

Look out for their specials too, and try the suckling pork canneloni – delicious morsels of soft pork entwined with the usual suspects, ricotta and spinach and dusted with parmesan.

Whether it's lunch, dinner or just a drink at the informal bar, it's easy to see why it's a firm neighbourhood favourite.
