Le Gavroche: Haute cuisine of the highest order

A French culinary institution since 1967

With a history that stretches back to 1967 (including a stint on Lower Sloane Street), Michel and Alex Roux’s culinary institution has been dishing up high-class French cooking to Londoners ever since, becoming the first British restaurant to gain one, then two and then three Michelin stars.

Translating as the urchin (taken from Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables), there’s nothing scruffy about this Mayfair diner, which has been headed up by Michel Roux Jr, who first took over the kitchen in 1991. Although this change in ownership saw one star lost, two remain and within this sophisticated setting you can still expect haute cuisine of the highest order on a menu that traverses the annals of traditional French cookery, including creamy souffles, terrines and tartares. It’s far from cheap but remains one of London’s landmark dining experiences.
