For sausage connoisseurs: Mother Mash

With six styles of mash, eight types of sausage and five kinds of gravy (including veggie options), you’re able to create whatever you consider to be the perfect sausage and mash (£7.50 if you eat in the retro dining room; £5.95 from the takeaway menu). Great for filling up before a night out.

For City scoffers: Farm Collective

You’re in luck if your office is nearby (or near the outposts in Bank and Grays Inn Road). Not only does the collective serve hot food at lunchtime, such as pies and bangers and mash (£5.90), but it also sources ingredients ethically. And ten per cent of profits go to Chicks, a charity giving inner-city kids holidays in the countryside.

For arty mash: Albion Neo Nankside

Despite its urban setting, the café’s floor-to-ceiling windows look out on to a green terrace. This is the second of Terence Conran’s Albions, and like the Shoreditch branch, the menu is full of dependably delicious classics: beef stew, hotpot, cauliflower cheese, and sausage, mash and onion gravy (£9.75).
