Señor Ceviche Fitzrovia, review: This Latino Lothario is quite the charmer

This former pop-up helped to ignite London's passion for Peruvian, and we're still smitten with its ceviche
The eponymous ceviche at Señor Ceviche

In the early days of London’s Peruvian love affair, Señor Ceviche was one of the very first Latino Lotharios on the scene.

Originally a popular pop-up, the Peruvian food purveyors now have two permanent residences in Soho and Fitzrovia, serving up the eponymous dish of citrus-cured raw fish along with an array of other Andean delicacies.

For diners smitten with ceviche, the offering doesn’t disappoint. The “El Clasico” incarnation of the Peruvian national dish is sea bass centric, served with sweet potato puree, choclo corn and plantain, all bathed in a spice-spiked tiger’s milk marinade. For those intrigued by the Japanese influence on Peruvian cuisine, the Nikkei ceviche adds yellowfin tuna to the mix, with yuzu tobiko and a langoustine cracker, all in a ponzu tiger’s milk.

Surprising, but hugely welcome for the raw fish resistance, is the fact that some of Señor Ceviche’s star dishes lay outside of the ceviche remit. Their flat iron steak comes papaya-marinated with pickled shiitake mushroom and an uchucuta salsa (as exciting to eat as it is to pronounce). Libation-wise, the Pisco Sour is a must, but for seconds, a Peruvian Old Fashioned made with a cherry, mushroom and pine infused Pisco does more than nicely.
