The Shed: This restaurant really is The Good Life

The Gladwin Brothers serve up home-cooked and home-grown fare in their cosy country-style bolthole

It should have been obvious, but you’re still pleasantly surprised by just how shed-like The Shed is. Not in an actual shed way (three broken lawnmowers your dad keeps saying he’ll fix), but in the kind of way that everyone hopes their shed will one day become when they get round to it.

A pleasantly wizened veranda leads to a wholly inviting nook of a bar space, before opening up into a cranny of a gabled roofed dining room – creaky floorboards, mismatched chairs, pictures of cows and the odd bit of corrugated iron.

As you would expect, the Gladwin Brothers who own The Shed (and its sister restaurant Rabbit) are pretty outdoorsy. So much so that the restaurants actually source as much meat, veg, herbs as possible from their own West Sussex farm. Even the alcohol comes homemade – it sounds like a scary prospect, but the Nutbourne wine selection is not to be scoffed at.

The Shed serves British sharing dishes, so you can try a considerable amount of fauna and flora from the Gladwins’ patch, on a menu that changes regularly. In autumn, pumpkin gnocchi comes in a silken coat of creamy Tunworth cheese, delicately dabbling with fresh sage along the way. Partridge gets festive with brussell sprouts, prunes, wild mushrooms and a deliciously naughty partridge croquette. The star dish is The Shed’s hake, seasoned with samphire and caper, a saltiness that is cut through beautifully with the citrus of the lemon potato vinaigrette.

Forget your far flung food trends: a trip to The Shed makes is realise just how good we have it at home.
