Britain’s oldest national conservation body, Open Spaces Society, warns that a High Court judgment allowing a developer to build on a traditional village green in Wiltshire puts shared land across the country at risk.

So it’s refreshing to see a builder creating a village green, rather than concreting over one.

London Square Tadworth Gardens in the Surrey commuter belt is close to the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Developer London Square is building houses and flats facing on to a communal green space where summer fairs are being held — a treat for families that fosters a sense of community, with a helter-skelter, BBQ, live music, street theatre and falconry among the attractions.

It all seems a planet away from central London yet it’s in Zone 6, with regular trains to Waterloo from nearby Epsom as well as quick Gatwick and Heathrow links.

Double-fronted three-bedroom houses cost £569,950. Two-bedroom apartments start at £349,950. Help to Buy is available. Call 0333 666 4242.
