Award-winning theatre and film director Sean Mathias is selling his gorgeous Georgian home in Hackney.

International travel is keeping him away from the handsome four-bedroom period property in Mare Street, spanning three floors with a private garden.

Welsh-born Mathias, whose most recent stage project was The Exorcist at the Phoenix Theatre, is seeking £2.25 million through Foxtons.

He gave theatrical flair to the interiors, combining richly painted walls with kitsch furniture classics.

“I love my grand old lady of a house but as I work away from home so much I don’t spend nearly enough time there and feel this is the moment to find it a new custodian to love and cherish it,” he says.

Mathias is hanging on to his partnership in The Grapes pub at Limehouse, which he co-owns with Sir Ian McKellen and Evening Standard owner Evgeny Lebedev.
