Poor etiquette has led one in 10 Britons to be told that they are unwelcome in somebody's home, with guests who refuse to take their shoes off, help themselves to food and take control of the TV or music deemed the most annoying.

Over half of Britons do not enjoy having visitors, with more than three quarters admitting they have friends or family members who irritate them when they come over.

Home interiors specialist hillarys.co.uk asked 2,600 Britons aged 18 and over, all of whom either own or rent a home and frequently host guests, to list the habits that make their blood pressure rise the most.

Failing to remove shoes at the front door came out on top, annoying a quarter of respondents, followed by helping yourself to food from the fridge or cupboards without asking (17 per cent) and taking charge of the TV or playlist (14 per cent).

Nearly a fifth of respondents had stopped inviting someone round because of their rude behaviour.

Ironically, when it came to what they disliked most about staying at a friend or family members' house, over three quarters said the "strict rules" imposed on them by their hosts.

Turning the tables, researchers then asked all participants whether they considered themselves to be polite house guests, with a massive 89 per cent claiming that they were.
