Tony Blair saw Ken Livingstone as an "egomaniac" who wanted a Cabinet job, according to former No 10 spin chief Alastair Campbell.

The then-prime minister had considered making a "deal" with Mr Livingstone before the 2000 London mayoral election to stop him standing as an independent against Labour, say Mr Campbell's diaries, Power And The People, out this week.

Mr Livingstone is said to have told Mr Blair he was not "in the business of being his enemy".
