Alert over Ikea high chair where belt 'won't hold children safely'

Faulty: risk of child 'slipping out'
13 April 2012

The owners of more than 60,000 faulty Ikea high chairs have been warned that their children could slip out of them and hurt themselves.

So far there have been eight reports of the harness belt on the Antilop high chairs popping open unexpectedly, resulting in three minor injuries.

In a statement, the furniture giant admitted: "The high chair belt can open unexpectedly during use, creating a fall hazard."

The issue only affects Antilop high chairs from supplier £17389 with production dates 0607-0911. The batch numbers are moulded into the underside of the seats.

The £10.99 Chinese-made chairs have been a great success for the Swedish furniture chain with more than 60,000 from the rogue batch sold in Britain and 1.2million sold worldwide. The seats are often offered in restaurants to parents dining with small children.

Customers with affected chairs can visit Ikea or contact customer services on 0845 358 3364 to receive a free replacement belt.

The statement added: "No other high chairs are affected. Ikea apologises for any inconvenience this may cause."
