Anger over plans for new Tottenham football stadium

Plans for a new Tottenham stadium have come into touble from conservationists

Plans for a new 56,000-capacity stadium for Tottenham Hotspur face opposition from conservationists.

Developers want to build the stadium on a 20-acre site, with more than 400 homes, a hotel, museum and supermarket.

They intend to demolish the Red House building, the White Hart pub and an Edwardian dispensary.

These buildings and a row of Victorian shops stand on what is planned to be a large open space between Tottenham High Road and the new stadium.

Some of the buildings are listed by Haringey council and all fall within a conservation area created to protect the historic appearance of the High Road.

Heloise Brown, conservation adviser at the Victorian Society, said: "These buildings should not be sacrificed to create a bland open space that will be a wasteland apart from on match days. It will strip away an important layer of local history."

The planning application was submitted to the council in October.
