Baby Florence Cameron meets the media machine

12 April 2012

Florence met the media today — and fell fast asleep.

David Cameron's 10-day-old daughter was cradled in the arms of beaming mother Samantha for her first photo call in Downing Street.

Mr Cameron obliged photographers by kissing the baby three times. Asked how many nappies he had changed, he joked: "Hundreds."

Florence, who was born early while the Camerons were on holiday in Cornwall, wore a white shawl crocheted by charity fundraiser Jane Fraser-Cross, from Sutton Coldfield, who is known as "Granny Jane".

Mrs Cameron was wearing an orange dress, made by a local dressmaker, which she has worn before. Asked if the baby was keeping them awake, she smiled and replied: "Yes."

Mrs Fraser-Cross, 74, said she was "absolutely thrilled" the Camerons liked her gift.

"I'm so elated. I'm absolutely thrilled because I admire David Cameron and after all the sadness they went through... I feel honoured."

Florence was born at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro last Tuesday, weighing 6lb 1oz. She was not expected until this month, but caught the family by surprise while they were on holiday.

Her middle name, Endellion, refers to the village of St Endellion on the north Cornish coast, near where the Camerons were staying.

The Camerons are also parents to Nancy, six, and Arthur Elwen, four. The couple lost their other son, Ivan, who suffered from cerebral palsy and severe epilepsy, when he died aged six last year.
