Millions of British motorists heading to France on holiday this summer are driving into trouble, with the vast majority utterly unfamiliar with the rules of the road there.

More than eight in 10 are unable to translate - or even guess - the meaning of a crucial French road sign, pictured, which instructs motorists to give way, new research by a major insurer has revealed.

Eighty per cent did not know the French speed limits and 86 per cent were unaware that the drink-drive limit is much lower than in Britain.
The knowledge gap emerged when insurer Swiftcover.com asked 2,000 British motorists to sit a mock driving test based on the written exam that French drivers have to pass. Respondents had to answer 35 or more questions correctly within 20 minutes, but 96 per cent failed.
