British soldier dies in Afghanisan

A British soldier was killed in Afghanistan in one of the UK's biggest co-ordinated air operations of modern times, the Ministry of Defence said today.
The 1st Battalion Welsh Guards soldier died yesterday and was the third to be killed in southern Afghanistan over the weekend. All three were due to be named today. His death takes the number of UK service personnel killed in the country since October 2001 to 174. Next of kin has been informed.
He was killed in an explosion while on foot near Gereshk as part of Operation Panthers Claw. A soldier from the 2nd Battalion The Mercian Regiment and a soldier from The Light Dragoons were also killed in the operation.
