BT 'is sneaking' euro into Britain

BT has been accused of introducing the euro by stealth after fitting hundreds of new phone boxes with slots to take the European coins.

Several hundred BT kiosks in London now accept euros so that tourists and Britons returning from the Continent with coins can make calls.

But critics have accused the company of 'euro-creep' and are demanding to know how many euros have been spent in its phone boxes. Tory Eurosceptic MP Sir Teddy Taylor said: 'This is yet another example of euro-creep. The demand is not there. Why isn't the same done for the US dollar, which is used a great deal more than the euro?'

A spokesman for BT, which makes profits of £5.5million a day, insisted the move was 'purely a business decision'. He added: 'This is an ongoing process to provide a convenience to our customers.'
