BT ordered to close website

12 April 2012

BT has been ordered by the High Court to block access to a film sharing website on copyright infringement grounds within 14 days.

The blocking of the Newzbin2 site is the first time a website has been blocked on such grounds.

The judge also ordered BT to pay the full costs of implementing the blocking order, raising fears it could lead to an increase in broadband prices.

The film industry claims the download site makes over £1million per year, and welcomed the move.

Lord Puttnam, president of the Film Distributors' Association, said: "This is a very significant day for the UK's creative industries. The law is clear. Industrial online piracy is illegal and can be stopped."
