All aboard: 2.3 billion passenger journeys were made by bus last year
12 April 2012

The number of journeys made on London buses has reached a 53-year high, official figures show.

There were nearly 2.3 billion passenger journeys last year - 24 million more than the previous year and more than the entire number across the British rail network.

Every weekday 7,500 London buses carry more than six million people on 700 routes, and last year saw the highest number of journeys in London since 1957, when there were 2.8 billion.

The Transport for London figures come as Mayor Boris Johnson prepares to launch six prototypes of his new Routemaster bus early next year. He said London had "possibly the most comprehensive network of bus services in the world".
