Capital is costliest place for a burial

London is the most expensive place to die in Britain, research shows today.

The average cost of a burial in the capital has shot up by 9.2 per cent in the past year to £4,600 as the shortage of grave space grows more acute.

The total cost of laying someone to rest, including venue and hearse hire, catering and administration of the estate, now costs £9,400 for the average Londoner, according to insurer Sun Life Direct.

Despite that, Londoners are the least prepared, with just under half having any insurance.
