Captain Corelli author to star in his own 'Under Milk Wood' play

12 April 2012

Award-winning author Louis de Bernières is to guest star in the live professional premiere of his only play.

The Captain Corelli's Mandolin writer will appear as a narrator at some of the "60-minute sensory experience" performances of Sunday Morning at the Centre of the World by young theatre company Bad Physics at the Southwark Playhouse.

The play was originally broadcast on Radio 3 in 1999 and is a homage to the diverse community of Earlsfield where de Bernières lived until the life-changing global success of Captain Corelli.

De Bernières, 56, said: "It was written when I was about to leave south-west London having lived there for 10 years. I wanted to do my own Under Milk Wood of the people I had grown fond of during that time. Many of them had been there since before the war."

The production will run from March 22 to April 16. It will go on to the Brighton Fringe Festival and the Latitude festival in Suffolk.
