Cool: Becks scores, Madeley flops

Suzanne Stevenson12 April 2012

He made the nation squirm with his excruciating impression of Ali G. Now Richard Madeley's daytime TV achievements have finally been recognised - with the award of the title Britain's most uncool person.

The chat show presenter topped a list of 20 people who have fallen from favour with the public, narrowly beating TV prankster Jeremy Beadle and Tony Blair.

The result is a further blow for Madeley after he and his wife and co-presenter Judy Finnegan suffered poor ratings having switching from ITV to Channel 4.

There are some predictable entries in the list, including Sir Cliff Richard at No.15. He has long struggled to be seen as cool despite his chart success down the decades.

Radio and TV presenter Chris Evans, sacked by Virgin Radio but reportedly making a TV comeback after months of holidaying with wife Billie, was at No.13.

The Carling survey also looked at some of the coolest people. The public adulation of David Beckham showed no sign of easing as he topped the poll for the Coolest Briton of all time, beating Sir Sean Connery and Robbie Williams. But Sir Michael Caine emerged as the coolest all-rounder.

He was named the 11th coolest Briton and his film Get Carter was voted the Coolest British movie. The Italian Job came fourth and Alfie was 12th.

Alex Bilmes, of men's magazine GQ, defended uncool stars, saying: 'These surveys can be quite unfair. Someone like Richard Madeley might be considered naff but that is part of what makes him endearing.

'Jeremy Beadle is actually very clever, which is cool, although most people don't perceive him like that.'
